Microwave breast cancer screening relies on the performance and robustness of the sensing element, which directly impacts detection accuracy and reliability. This paper presents a flexible cavity-backed hybrid patch/slot nearfield antenna embedded in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a biocompatible polymer designed for integration with wearable or conformal medical imaging systems. Two successive design iterations were evaluated through full-wave electromagnetic simulations, focusing on impedance matching, mutual coupling, and specific absorption rate (SAR) compliance to ensure safe and effective operation. Simulations were conducted for both designs, and experimental measurements were performed on the initial prototype in proximity to various biological tissues to validate its practical feasibility. The results highlight the importance of the steps in the evolution of the sensing-element design and its potential for enhanced sensitivity and increased compatibility with microwave breast screening applications.
