A 3D-Printed Microwave Absorber Using Carbon Nanotube/Polymer Nanocomposites

Abstract
This paper presents the design, simulation, and experimental evaluation of a truncated pyramid electromagnetic wave absorber fabricated from 3D-printed polylactic acid (PLA) containing <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$4.0 \text{wt}. \%$</tex> carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The structure exploits the anisotropic dielectric properties induced by CNT alignment during the 3D printing process. Simulation results indicate that the mean absorption value of approximately 97% of the incident energy is achieved across the frequency range of 6 to 40 GHz. Measurement results further demonstrate that the structure exhibits over 94% absorption performance over the X-band (<tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$8.2-12.4 \text{GHz}$</tex>). The minimum reflection of −21 dB is achieved at 8.5 GHz. The structure has a thickness of 8.4 mm.
