Elliptical Programmable Metasurface Antenna Based on Substrate Integrated Waveguide Technology for Millimeter-Wave Applications

Abstract
This work presents a programmable metasurface antenna designed for dynamic communication systems. The design utilizes bias feeding to control the activation of PIN diodes across the metasurface capacitive gaps, aligned with the microstrip line. This structure operates in dual frequency bands within the millimeter-wave range, specifically around 25 GHz and 28 GHz. The system exhibits excellent performance, achieving transmission coefficients of -1.7 dB at 25.3 GHz and -2 dB at 27.6 GHz, using a single unit cell. When the octaconcatenated metasurface unit cells are activated, the antenna maintains a return loss of -10 dB across the full frequency range. Additionally, a significant transmission resonance of -18.78 dB is observed at 28 GHz, corresponding to a high radiative power level. The antenna generates a range of radiation patterns, with beamwidths varying between 13.3° and 24.7°.
