Abstract
Abstract: This paper argues that the conception of the agential self, attributed by scholars to Hume, can help clarify loyalty’s motive, which is rarely discussed in the literature on loyalty. According to the agential conception, the self is a composite of the causes of pride and humility. Developing this view, I propose that loyalty is the motive to remain with, and promote the well-being and interests of, the individuals, groups, traditions, and institutions that make up the composite agential self. I then argue that this account of loyalty’s motivation explains loyalty’s virtue on Hume’s account of the virtues. We approve of the motive of loyalty because its relation to the self makes it a particularly reliable motive to assist others, which is useful to them. We also approve of the motive of loyalty because it is useful to the self: it motivates a person to promote the interests of those whose well-being most influences his or her own interests.
