The rising threats of cybersecurity attacks on networked electronic devices, including the Internet of Things, smart cards, and supervisory control and data acquisition systems, have amplified the need for reliable yet simple hardware authentication methods. This experimental study evaluates the feasibility and reliability of power-up-generated data in the SRAM for authenticating the ATmega32U4 microcontroller. Automated data analysis was applied to measurements from 40 Arduino Micro boards using on-chip SRAM as a physical unclonable function (PUF). The study evaluated the trade-offs between whole-byte and bit-selected enrollment, resulting in an automated approach that reduces time, error rate, and cost.
