Abstract
In his paper Anarchy, State, and Utopia, philosopher Robert Nozick proposes a famous thought experiment, the “experience machine.” This machine, designed by neuropsychologists, would allow individuals to live all the desired experiences, creating a perfect illusion of their reality. However, a crucial question arises : would we choose to connect to it for a life of illusory, yet intense pleasures ? Nozick argues that most people would refuse, concluding that something matters to us beyond our subjective experiences. In this paper, I examine the implications of this thought experiment, including Nozick’s conclusion—that something is important to us beyond our experiences—and the objection it raises against hedonist theories of well-being. This article aims to provide clarification on one of the major contemporary debates in the philosophy of well-being : the validity of hedonist theories and the need to develop a theory of well-being that goes beyond the realm of individual experiences.
