Abstract
This article explores Samra Habib’s memoir We Have Always Been Here, by examining how they reorient their queer gender and sexual subjectivity in a discursive and affective space that challenges the centrality of popular universalist secular and Islamic moralist imaginaries concerning Muslim queer identity. In particular, I examine how Habib seeks agency from a reimagined queer Muslimness that is shaped by intersectional lived experiences. Through their (re)positioned religiosity, informed by their secular feminist inspiration, Habib carves out an interstitial space to exercise their sexuality and gender, creating a coalitional consciousness that is resistive to dualistic reductions in universalistic secular and Islamic moralist standpoints. Against exclusionary ideological frames, their interstitial Muslim queer epistemology is inclusive, dynamic, and enunciative.
