Abstract
This chapter deals with the question of the military nature of the Curonian settlement in the Memel area (today Klaipėda). It begins by examining the indications of the presence of the Curonian population in the southern part of Curonia in the second half of the 13th century, after the construction of the Teutonic Order's Memel castle (1252–1253). Using a comparative method and taking into account the results of the research on the Scalovians/Schalvians in the area of Ragnit (today Neman), the question of the military character of the Curonian settlement at the Memel castle after 1328 is then addressed. Source evidence indicating the fulfilment of various military functions by the Curonians here in relation to the Teutonic Order, especially the commandery of Memel, is presented in detail. As a result, this chapter argues that despite the relatively small number of Curonians in Memel, the military services they provided were of considerable significance to the so-called ‘Lithuanian War’ waged by the Teutonic Order from the last quarter of the 13th century to the first quarter of the 15th century, due to the great importance of Memel castle for the Order.
