Aerial optical cables along electrical power lines encompass a range of specialized technologies designed to enhance communication, monitoring, and data transmission within power networks. These include: OPGW (Optical Ground Wire), OPPC (Optical Phase Conductor), MASS (Metallic Armoured Self-Supporting Cable), ADSS (All-Dielectric Self-Supporting) and OPAC (optical attached cable). Optical Phase Conductors (OPPCs) are a new innovation merging optical fibers with standard power line cables. They revolutionize power transmission and communication by enabling both functions in a single infrastructure. This review examines OPPCs, explaining how they facilitate communication along power lines without needing an extra ground wire. It also discusses challenges faced by other technologies like OPGW and ADSS cables. By showcasing OPPCs' evolving landscape and potential uses, this discussion reveals how they're transforming traditional power systems with optical technology.
