A narrative review assessing the impact of multiple ecological systems on rural resilience in the face of chronic stressors

Abstract
Resilience and the mechanisms that promote adaptation to adversity are now understood as dependent on multisystemic factors and processes with biological, psychological, social, and ecological systems interacting in complex patterns to support development. A narrative review was conducted to study the influence multiple systems have on the resilience of people residing in rural and remote communities exposed to chronic stressors. Findings show how studies (N = 64) have not explored in depth, the nature of resilience processes sensitive to rural populations. Compared to other domains, there is also less research focusing on biological factors, institutional factors and resilience-enabling aspects of the natural environment.
