Abstract
This paper questions whether social work, traditionally associated with social control and behavior modification within carceral systems, can align with the broader goals of abolitionism. Abolitionism, rooted in the dismantling of oppressive structures and the pursuit of liberation, challenges conventional approaches to social work. To break from the carceral logic of current social work practice, social workers must build new ways of practicing. Consequently, radical social workers have pushed social work as a profession toward abolitionist leanings. This paper continues an exploration of these ideas and reevaluates the role(s) social work can play in working toward a liberated society.
