Au château de Versailles, le stuc est une composante essentielle du grand décor, dialoguant avec l’architecture et la peinture. Les décors de stuc de Versailles sous le règne de Louis XIV ont été mis en œuvre par des sculpteurs polyvalents, issus pour la plupart de l’Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture et aguerris à ce type de technique. Ces décors ont été exécutés en deux grandes phases : les années 1670-1673 pour le grand appartement du Roi et le grand appartement de la Reine, puis les années 1678-1683 lorsque ces espaces désormais dévolus à l’apparat furent modifiés par l’adjonction de la Grande Galerie et des salons de la Guerre et de la Paix adjacents. Outre une fonction architecturale et d’encadrement des toiles marouflées, les ornements et figures de stuc, oscillant entre bas et haut-relief, véhiculent aussi un message. Enfin, les derniers grands chantiers du règne, au tournant du siècle, sont marqués par l’apparition du plâtre qui se généralise dans le grand décor. Conduits par de nouvelles générations d’artistes, ces travaux sont aussi caractérisés par un style plus léger qui renouvelle formes et motifs.
