Transforming the Culture of Violence in Jamaican Schools

Abstract
The culture of violence is rapidly becoming one of the most disruptive forces in today’s schools. This epidemic respects no socioeconomic and political boundaries: It is pervasive in developed, democratic, civil societies as well as in developing societies. This study moves beyond the externally imposed zero tolerance approach to reduce violence in schools and explores instead a Change From Within (CFW) model implemented in selected urban schools in Kingston, Jamaica. Engaging in interactive, dialogic, and collaborative relationships called a Circle of Friends, school administrators implemented a philosophy of self-reliance that strategically addressed the problems of violence in their schools and communities.
