Abstract
Abstract The Faroe Islands is a key stakeholder in the Arctic region’s future; however, it is rarely discussed as being an “Arctic state”. This is problematic since belonging to this category carries a special degree of power, influence, and voice regarding Arctic issues. Realizing that Denmark is included as in the Arctic states category, along with Canada, Russia, United States and Norway, Finland, Iceland and Sweden, and further realizing that the Faroe Islands is a self-governing autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, in 2022 Faroese policymakers felt it was necessary to publish a statement proclaiming the Faroe Islands as a partner in the Arctic region. This paper will illustrate the usefulness of a critical discourse analysis, given the fast-changing dynamics in the region. It also offers support for this small polity concern and elucidates emergent sites for potential exercise of power. Especially, because the region is warming, and the Arctic ice is melting at accelerating rates – freeing up access to rare-earth resources.
