Valorisation des peaux d’abattoir au Québec : état des lieux et perspectives

Abstract
Avant la modernisation de l’agriculture et des procédés d’abattage au Québec, les peaux d’animaux étaient valorisées par le tannage afin de produire différents cuirs. Cette industrie a subi un déclin, avec comme conséquence actuelle l’équarrissage de nombreuses peaux d’abattoir. Si ce procédé permet une valorisation terminale, elle reste en deçà du potentiel écologique et économique des peaux dans les secteurs du cuir ou des biomatériaux. Cet article présente une analyse descriptive de l’évolution des pratiques de valorisation des peaux au Québec sur la base de sources historiques et gouvernementales. Par ailleurs, des perspectives d’innovation dans ce domaine en matière de procédés écoresponsables de tannage, d’évolution du modèle de production agricole et de développement de produits alternatifs sont discutées. Dans une perspective d’économie circulaire, où l’optimisation des ressources à chaque étape du cycle de vie est primordiale, il apparaît que les peaux issues des abattoirs du Québec présentent un potentiel sous-exploité.
