Abstract
In the longest and most detailed chapter in the book, Brault examines the efforts of France&s;s failed leadership during the occupation in 1940, from the establishment of the Vichy Regime in July to its first major cabinet shuffle in December. The defeatists now in power actively sought to collaborate with the Nazis, the principal theme in Brault&s;s account of ineptitude and infighting among factional interests on both sides. The Nazis’ disdain for their apparent French partners in the occupation did not deter the fruitless efforts of the enfeebled 84-year-old Marshall Philippe Pétain. His protective inner circle worked in concert with elements of the fascistic Comité Secret d&s;Action Révolutionnaire (CSAR) to promote their own agenda. After discussing the self-serving activities of the Nazi Party&s;s National Socialist Welfare organization in Paris, Brault details the rivalry between the Vichy Minister of the Interior Marcel Peyrouton and the Regime&s;s Vice President of Pétain&s;s cabinet Pierre Laval that led to the latter&s;s dismissal. The result, according to Brault, was Vichy&s;s total subservience to German political authorities.
