Single Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPADs) emit photons whenever an avalanche occurs. These photons are mostly re-absorbed within the same SPAD or region of the device that are inactive, but a few of them may trigger avalanches in neighboring SPADs or escape the device. The former case is referred as (internal) cross-talk and the latter can lead to the external cross-talk phenomenon should one or more escaping photons be detected by another device. The case where an escaping photon is detected by the same device is folded into (internal) cross-talk in our context. External cross-talk is a system level phenomenon because it involves several processes: photon emission, transport and detection, and as such it is detector dependent. In this paper, we will focus on a test experiment called Light only Liquid Xenon (LolX), We will show what we understand and don't understand about external cross-talk and attempt to extrapolate to any detector system.
