Abstract
This paper describes an innovative cooling scheme applied to a medium voltage adjustable speed drive (ASD) that was developed as a collaboration between a medium voltage drives manufacturer and end user. These ASDs are installed in remote locations in North America with ambient temperatures ranging from -45°C to 50°C. Critical downtime in these remote installations must be avoided as costs associated with downtime are high. In addition, we will outline innovations with this design that focus on factors such as increased operability, maintainability, diagnostic options, and standardization leading to unit interchangeability.A description of the pump application will be provided followed by an overview of the ASD system. The climate control system and operational characteristics will be detailed. Control loops and operation states of the climate control system will be detailed in this paper. Site data will be presented to illustrate system performance and comparisons to previous installation will be presented in this work.
