Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The Montgomery Collection of Caribbean Photographs comprises over 3,000 photographic objects dating from circa 1839 to circa 1940. It was amassed by Patrick Montgomery from 2005 to 2011 and was later acquired by the Art Gallery of Ontario in 2019. This project focuses on cataloguing 754 materials of the Montgomery Collection and creating a bilingual English-Spanish finding aid. It covers collection items dating circa 1839 to circa 1890 from the territories in the northern half of the Circum-Caribbean—the Bahamas, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Turks and Caicos. The finding aid addresses the sociohistorical context in which the collection material was produced, the AGO’s acquisition, a summary of the catalogued material, intellectual arrangements of the material by geographic location depicted and by relevant subject, and biographical information about the makers. Including the spreadsheet catalogue with the scope of collection materials to this thesis.

Fetched live from OpenAlex and de-inverted. Abstracts are not stored in this database: the inverted indexes are 8.6 GB of the frame’s 9.3 GB of text, and the host has 13 GB free.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
