Cet article analyse les répercussions chez les acteurs et témoins d’un suicide lors de l’utilisation d’un pont pour mettre fin à ses jours, dans deux œuvres de littérature française contemporaine (L’envol de Sarah, Agnès Favre, 2007 et Avec toutes mes sympathies, Olivia de Lamberterie, 2018). Nous proposons de parcourir d’abord les caractéristiques physiques et symboliques d’un dispositif pensé pour relier des lieux spécifiques, mais qui est en réalité détourné à d’autres fins. Nous verrons ensuite, à travers l’analyse des deux récits, comment le passage du suicidaire sur le pont réécrit l’identité spatiale et temporelle de cette construction, y suspendant le temps pour toujours et y laissant les traces d’un voyage éphémère. Le pont apparaît alors comme un lieu public qui incarne symboliquement l’intime désespoir de ceux qui l’ont choisi pour mettre fin à leurs jours, à la vue et au su de tous.
