The international mobility of Chinese students: an economic-demographic perspective

Abstract
China was the world's leading source country of international students for the first two decades of the twenty-first century. However, the outbound mobility of Chinese students has declined significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic. This trend is often attributed to weakened ‘pull’ factors, such as the pandemic's impact and geopolitical tensions, and weakened ‘push’ factors, such as China's slowed domestic economy and declining birthrate. A critical question remains: what is the future of Chinese students’ outbound mobility? To answer this futurist question, this study has conducted a macro-level economic-demographic analysis, arguing that we should not expect to see a dramatic resurgence in Chinese students’ outbound mobility down the road, even if global geopolitical ‘pull’ factors and domestic economic ‘push’ factors were to improve. Instead, a paradoxical relationship between demand for education abroad and per-capita income suggests that international mobility from China is likely to plateau.
