Las especies de cactus (Cylindropuntia ramosissima) tienen una gran importancia ecológica en los desiertos, ya que actúan como un hábitat potencial para las comunidades de animales. Evaluar los efectos de la densidad de cactus sobre sus características morfológicas y sus asociaciones con animales puede aportar información sobre la composición de las comunidades desérticas. Para poner a prueba la hipótesis de que la densidad de cactus conespecíficos es ecológicamente relevante, realizamos muestreos de vegetación y fauna con el fin de determinar si la densidad influía en las características de los cactus y en las especies de animales asociadas. Encontramos que la densidad de cactus conespecíficos dentro de un radio de 5 m tuvo un efecto positivo significativo sobre la altura de los cactus y el número total de flores. A su vez, el número total de flores influyó positivamente en la cantidad de animales observados en los cactus focales. El número de ramas y la altura de los cactus influyeron negativamente en las asociaciones animales. Esto sugiere que la densidad de cactus puede ser una medida importante para estimar las características morfológicas de los cactus, y que dichas características pueden, a su vez, influir en las asociaciones de animales del desierto.
