Abstract
The article is devoted to the chronology and fortification of the “Western suburb” of Hellenistic Tanais. According to archaeological studies 1998–2002 and 2021–2024 important information was obtained, that allows us to speak confidently about the existence to the west of the citadel, at least since the third quarter of the 3rd century BC, of a single urban area with a common system of defensive structures. In recent years, in addition to the discovery of a continuation of the defensive ditch and residential development, coinciding in time of existence and configuration with those previously explored to the west and east of them, a probable location of another entrance to the city from the steppe was identified in the form of a rocky isthmus in the line of the ditch, about 3 m wide. It cannot be ruled out that during the construction of the defensive line, part of the early necropolis was damaged, including that left by the first inhabitants of the Western suburbs, who lived in adobe houses.
