Abstract
The Battle of Cory Hall, in Cardiff in November 1916, was one of the most famous clashes between supporters and opponents of Britain's war effort. It, like similar incidents, is now almost forgotten. These clashes, however, are useful in illuminating the war as they accentuated the social-political divide beginning to emerge throughout Britain at this time. Among the most interesting aspects of this divide were that it was essentially ideological in nature, and that the wartime 'patriots ' were greatly preponderant. The violent, grassroots ralliement of forces from all sections of society behind the war effort was a principal reason for Britain's endurance in the war, and for the emergence of the Lloyd George government.
