Abstract
La Bibliothèque nationale du Québec a été créée par une loi de l’Assemblée législative sanctionnée le 12 août 1967. Elle est l’oeuvre de visionnaires voués à la conservation du patrimoine documentaire québécois. L’auteure rappelle la genèse de l’institution, favorisée par le contexte de la Révolution tranquille, mais entravée par l’hostilité de certains groupes et les hésitations du pouvoir politique. Le développement de la BNQ a été marqué par de grandes réalisations, quelques malencontreux incidents et, surtout, par des problèmes d’espace récurrents qui se sont résorbés en deux étapes : le transfert, en 1997, de plusieurs de ses activités dans un immeuble rénové (Centre de conservation), dans le nord-est de Montréal, et l’installation des services au public dans la Grande Bibliothèque du Québec en 2005.
