Abstract
Objective: to review the literature on the use of subcutaneous intermittent opioids for pain control in patients with terminal illness. Material and methods: we conducted a review of the relevant literature on the subject by searching MEDLINE through December 2008. We also reviewed the experience of our group with this technique. We reviewed 40 articles, of which 23 reported on the administration of opioids subcutaneously. Results and conclusions: the intermittent administration of opioids subcutaneously is a good alternative to achieve pain control in patients with terminal illness. The Edmonton injector allows for safe, inexpensive, comfortable administration by patients and caregivers at home.
