Abstract
Este artigo é fruto de pesquisa exploratória, realizada na cidade de Montreal, subsidiada pelo governo canadense no ano de 2006, e das reflexões que têm sido feitas acerca da relação entre o mundo lusófono e a instituição escolar no âmbito do grupo de pesquisa, ensino e extensão Acolhendo Alunos em Situação de Exclusão Escolar e Social: o papel da instituição escolar – certificado pela Universidade de São Paulo – que conta com o apoio do CNPq e da FAPESP. \n \nA partir de contato com comunidade de diáspora portuguesa em Montreal e de um breve resgate da história da lusofonia, discutiremos a semiperifericidade econômico-social de Portugal – apesar de ter construído o mais longo império colonial da história da humanidade e, decorrente desta situação de antiga metrópole, analisaremos o papel da instituição escolar no contexto montrealense no sentido da difusão da língua e da cultura lusófona.
