Abstract
Le féminisme s’est développé en parallèle avec la montée de la question ouvrière, et donc du projet de réforme sociale élaboré par les catholiques au tournant des xixe-xxe siècles. Un projet qui s’articule en grande partie sur le modèle familial. Dès le dernier quart du xixe siècle, les regards catholiques se tournent vers la femme, salvatrice d’un monde en perdition, tout particulièrement dans les grandes villes. À Bruxelles, l’évolution démographique et sociale s’oppose à cet idéal. L’émancipation croissante des femmes, leur accès à l’éducation, leur présence accrue sur le marché du travail, leur refus d’assumer une famille nombreuse... sont autant d’éléments à combattre. Vue sous cet angle, la grande ville n’est pas seulement un lieu de perdition, mais le lieu de confrontation entre deux modèles de société : l’un catholique et l’autre laïque.
