Esta revision aborda los aspectos cardiopulmonares de la obesidad en las mujeres no embarazadas. Los efectos de la obesidad sobre la capacidad de difusion pulmonar y el intercambio gaseoso se relacionan con la proporcion cintura-cadera. Las mujeres obesas tienen mas riesgo de tener insuficiencia cardiaca que aquellas de peso normal, un riesgo que empeora progresivamente al aumentar el indice de masa corporal. Tambien tienen una mala adaptacion cardiaca y poseen un menor pulso de oxigeno con el esfuerzo maximo. El gasto cardiaco, la frecuencia cardiaca y el volumen total de sangre son mayores en las mujeres obesas, mientras que su fraccion de eyeccion es menor que la de las mujeres de peso normal; una perdida sustancial de peso normaliza estos parametros.
