Abstract
The Atherley Narrows Fish Weir Complex represents a likely continuous use of fish resources which seasonally migrate through the narrows that join Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching for at least the past 4500 years. Dredging of the narrows in the mid-XIXth century, as well as more recent use of the area by pleasure boaters and fishermen has resulted in the destruction of a portion of the surviving wood pole structure. Recent underwater archaeological in vestigations by Parks Canada and others have shown that significant ele ments of the weirs have survived and their value is such that the Atherley Narrows Fish Weir has been declared a National Historic Site. It is managed jointly by Parks Canada, the local community of Orillia and the region's Chip pewa First Nation.
