La cofradia fue una institucion colonial de caracter civil y religioso al mismo tiempo, con un doble estatuto juridico eclesiastico, ligado a la curia episcopal y a la organizacion parroquial por un lado, y por el otro al poder civil atado al virrey, los gobiernos regionales, los cabildos y municipios, cuya administracion generaba una dinamica relacion economica y politica entre las comunidades y las autoridades, pero no exenta de repercusiones y conflictos. La cofradia como asociacion civil y religiosa tenia una funcion simple que era dar asistencia a las celebraciones religiosas alrededor de una imagen cristologica (un crucifijo, un santo entierro, un santo nino), o en la veneracion de la Virgen en cualquiera de sus muchas advocaciones como la Virgen de Guadalupe, la Virgen de los Remedios, o a la veneracion de un santo o santa de los muchos del santoral, en especial aquellos que encajaban en el calendario agricola, como San Jose para el inicio del barbecho, San Isidro Labrador y San Juan para el inicio de las lluvias, Ntra. Sra. de los Remedios y La Virgen de Guadalupe como fiesta de accion de gracias e indicadores del proceso de maduracion de las cosechas. A este calendario agricola se anadia la veneracion especial de los santos arcangeles vinculados a los ritos del agua como San Miguel, San Rafael y San Gabriel. Una de las herencias medioevales traidas a la Nueva Espana por las ordenes religiosas y la Corona Espanola, la cofradia, encontro un desarrollo excepcional, ya que se arraigo en las tradiciones locales y se organizo bajo conIntroduccion
