Abstract
This article describes three different approaches to the growth of rail transit in the Pacific Northwest. The transit programs are highlighted for their approach to rail transit as an economic development tool that is presented with an environmentally friendly approach. The rail transit systems profiled include: 1) Portland, Oregon and its MAX light rail line, the Portland Streetcar merging light rail with traditional streetcar, and the West Side Express commuter rail service; 2) Seattle, Washington and its Sound Transit light rail transit system; and, 3) the SkyTrain Advanced Light Rail Transit and the West Coast Express commuter service operated by Translink in Vancouver, British Columbia.
