This article discusses the early 2007 proposition by the Toronto Transit Commission in Canada outlining the construction of seven new light rail transit (LRT) lines to bolster the agency’s capacity. With an increase of 27 million riders between 2004 and 2006 alone, up to 445 million, operators explain that they aren’t able to keep up with rider loads using the current capacity. The C$6.1 billion project (US$5.3 billion) will, if approved, take 15 years to construct and serve an additional 175 million passengers. LRT was chosen as it will provide a lower volume of harmful emissions than buses while being about 1/10th the price of a subway system (which would need to be excavated). The cultural effects are also noted, as streetcar lines can bring commercial and residential vibrancy to a community. The article also discusses challenges along each of the new proposed corridors.
