Abstract
The greater Montreal metropolitan region has experienced growth in public transit ridership over the past year. This article discusses why the Montreal public transit system is weathering the current economic crisis so well. Quebec province has a long tradition of commitment to public transport. The province provides 100% of funding for metro construction and 50% of funding for rolling stock replacement. This commitment and new funding programs advocated by the government for infrastructure and operations are key to the success in combating the recession. The greater Montreal region has also aggressively promoted urban passenger transport over the past 10 years. A 2006 policy on public transport by the Quebec government targeted an 8% increase in ridership by 2012 and the government is pursuing a multi-pronged approach to reach this goal. The challenge for Montreal is to make sure that the programs are maintained and that funding remains stable in order to meet the increasing passenger demand.
