Abstract
Intermodal traffic of Class Is picked up briskly after a post-Sept. 11 consumer-spending malaise. In the second quarter of 2002, U.S. and Canadian railroads increased intermodal traffic 8.5 percent compared with the previous period in 2001. Better service accounts for increasing volume, as well as international business from Asia and Mexico, according to the article. At the same time, trucking firms are struggling with fuel prices, insurance costs and a driver shortage. The article describes how individual railroads are boosting business and positioning themselves for future intermodal growth.
