When rehabilitation of the functionally obsolete Capilano River Bridge, which connects North and West Vancouver in Canada, was not practical, the owners decided to replace it. This article presents the details of the construction project, which was completed under a restrictive schedule and involved laterally sliding the existing bridge to become the construction detour. In addition, in order to avoid having to pave during harsh winter months, a design compromise was reached which utilized the concrete deck as the running surface, while still achieving durability by employing all stainless steel reinforcing.
