The article reviews the operation initiated by Canadian Pacific Railway to help become a highly scheduled carrier and a more aggressive marketer. The company, one of the smallest Class I railroads and as such the most dependent on connections with the others, now relies on an Integrated Operating Plan that moves all trains on schedule regardless of tonnage. Blocking loads and aggregating blocks to move as a single unit bypassing yards, the IOP encompasses schedules for: empty cars to fill customer's orders; loaded cars in dock-to-dock movements; trains in all main line corridors; workload at yards and intermodal terminals; and track and locomotive maintenance.
