Situe dans un milieu fortement urbanise, au carrefour du boulevard de l'Acadie et de l'autoroute Metropolitaine (40), le rond-point de l'Acadie dans sa configuration actuelle ne repond plus aux attentes d'aujourd'hui. Son reamenagement en un veritable echangeur ameliore la fluidite de la circulation, ajoute des voies de service sans croisement et ameliore la securite des pietons et des usagers du transport en commun. La conception et la realisation des ouvrages d'art requis pour la nouvelle geometrie sont influencees par de nombreuses contraintes de maintien des deplacements, d'emprise restreinte, de services publics enfouis, de proximite d'habitations, de durabilite des ouvrages et d'integration architecturale globale du milieu. Les ouvrages d'art comprennent plus de 2 kilometres de murs de soutenement en plus de 4 ponts d'etagement dont les charpentes d'acier sont les elements vedettes du projet. Avec un rayon de courbure minimal de 37,1 metres, ces charpentes constituees de poutres en acier courbes repoussent les limites des geometries realisables jusqu'alors avec ce materiau.
