Abstract
This article describes the success of Canadian low-cost air carrier WestJet, launched in 1996 on the Southwest model and enjoying healthy growth. Steps include employee stock options and profit sharing and a corporate philosophy that explicitly puts needs of employees first (and calls customers guests). Scheduling is not based on seniority, so all employees share the pain of unpopular time slots. Training costs are kept down by close management of cockpit teams. Rising profits haven't kept it from expanding to the point where it is truly a national air carrier, with 24 destinations and 1,550 flights a week. WestJet stays away from hub and spoke and won't connect more than seven flights at a time. It also does not overbook flights. Delays more than two hours result in an automatic credit. The emphasis on service, frequency of flights and a friendly corporate brand means it doesn't have to offer the absolutely lowest fare on every leg. The article describes future plans and possible challenges from other carriers such as Air Canada.
