Abstract
En México el maíz es de suma importancia, dado que es la base y sustento de la alimentación para millones de habitantes del medio rural y urbano. A raíz de 2006, el precio mundial de granos comenzó a subir, destacando el precio del maíz derivado de la promoción en EE.UU. para la producción de etanol. El alza en el precio del maíz en México ha generado efectos negativos tanto en los hogares de productores de subsistencia rurales como en los hogares urbanos, hogares donde el cereal es un elemento fundamental en la dieta. En la literatura hay poca evidencia empírica de la relación que existe entre pobreza y consumo de maíz, así entonces, este estudio pretende abordar esta relación, y con ello, tener una idea fehaciente de los posibles efectos en el alza del precio de este cereal y vislumbrar los posibles escenarios de producir etanol a partir de maíz.
