Abstract
This article documents the process the Construction Practices Subcommittee followed to research available documents related to pavement degradation and to identify examples. Requests were made to local governments and other agencies around the United States and Canada for reports dealing with pavement degradation. Factors affecting pavement performance included the pavement material, soil conditions, climate, traffic volumes, and repair practices. The reports that were evaluated by the committee focused more on asphalt concrete over an aggregate base. Based on the reports, the subcommittee made numerous findings, which the article details, regarding how well a pavement system and consequent patch will perform. Ten documents were received and evaluated, and summaries of seven selected reports are included in the article.
