An automated passenger bridge (APB) system can help improve aircraft departure and arrival performance, as well as offering savings in bridge operator and training costs, and fuel and crew costs. An APB system can also aid in reducing the potential for aircraft damage and downtime which can result from improper manual operation of bridges. As the aircraft taxies toward the gate, the APB system uses advanced photogrammetry techniques to continuously monitor the exact location of the passenger door of the aircraft. The APB also features a vision system that uses reflective tape on the aircraft and a motion control algorithm to aid in determining the correct path for the bridge to follow. The article describes how an APB system was developed for Air Canada and how it is also set to be installed for United Airlines at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago.
