Abstract
Bien qu'ils se disent socialistes et soient présentés comme tels pair Francis Ronsin dans son livre La grève des ventres, les dirigeants des ligues néo-malthusiennes françaises (1896-1939), Paul Robin en tête, se font de la pensée de Malthus une conception tronquée en présentant sa « loi de population » comme une loi naturelle s'imposant à tous les régimes sociaux. Sous le couvert d'attaques virulentes contre la droite pronataliste, ils subissent nettement l'influence (droitière de la Malthusian League anglaise, au point de reléguer à l'arrière-plan l'utopie révolutionnaire et la lutte contre le capitalisme. Cette affirmation repose sur la mise en évidence de la proche parenté des textes de leurs quatre périodiques avec ceux des deux journaux nnensuels de la Malthusian League sur un certain nombre de thèmes reliés aux méfaits de la surpopulation et au seul remède efficace, celui de l'adaptation des comportements individuels — par la contraception — au déterminisme incontournable de la loi de population.
