Many emerging software description languages support separation of concerns using multiple perspectives or aspects. This separation can exist at various levels of the software lifecycle, from elicitation of requirements to implementation. No matter what level of abstraction, though, the composition of these perspectives is done by establishing the correspondence of state and operations across the concerns. We are working on a formal model that captures the essential ways in which perspectives can be combined. Our aim is to have a simple formal language that can be used early in the lifecycle to define perspectives and their correspondence. A composition described in this language can be translated to a form that can be formally verified using a model checker and refined into more detailed descriptions, both at the specification level, using formal languages such as Alloy and Z, and at the implementation level, with languages such as AspectJ and HyperJ. 1 Introduction Software develop...
