Abstract
This article focuses on Canadian National (CN) Railway and its President and CEO E. Hunter Harrison. It describes Harrison’s response to Chicago’s bottleneck: go around. While Chicago works on the problem of too many trains running through the same area, Harrison decided to purchase another railroad, the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern, which allows CN to run around Chicago and improve transit time. This bold move is considered typical of Harrison, who is described in an accompanying article as the quintessential operating executive. He predicts 2008 could be a challenging year due to the country’s economy, and consequently the railroad’s capital spending will be somewhat lower than 2007. The article also describes the railroad’s J acquisition, its implementation of Precision Engineering, and its success with eAX (Electronic Authority Exchange) technology to provide mobile workers with wireless electronic authorities and real-time access to traffic controller screens.
