Abstract
As a rule, theology is taught in European universities; the contrary being an exception. The faculties of Catholic theology in Latin countries are often found in private universities, which are equivalent to public universities. In Germanic, Nordic and Anglo-Saxon countries, however, theology is taught in public universities. The article compares the facts with the juridical situation and the law of the European Union. The A. deals first with the situation of the faculties of Catholic theology in German State universities: denominational status, present problems (the nihil obstat, the presence of non-Catholic students, the Faculty in Frankfurt, financial difficulties, staffing). He then describes the situation of the faculties at Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium), Barcelona (Spain), Paris (France) and Innsbruck (Austria) : the present legal status of each faculty, the relationship of the faculty to the State, the legal status of the professors, the recognition of the degrees by the State.
