Abstract
The Map of the Month features the evolution of Canada’s grain network and the railroads it spawned. The article accompanying the map describes the history of the grain-gathering network serving farmers of three provinces: Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. The map shows the evolution of lines in place by 1941 when the network comprised more than 19,500 miles and served more than 5,000 grain elevators. By 1975, however, grain-handling trackage had deteriorated to the extent that those usually opposed to removing rails decided some must come up. By 2005, 35 percent of the region’s peak mileage had been abandoned, while another 2,500 miles or 13 percent had been spun off into regional railways.
