Abstract
Twenty-five years after the U.S. Congress passed the Staggers Rail Act of 1980 in an attempt to save an ailing industry by deregulating it, freight rail transportation is alive and well. This article presents a review of the industry's health, noting that all economic factors look favorable for railroads and continued expansion of commodity loadings is expected. Growth in the country's economy should continue to benefit the railroads and the only remaining question is how well they will be able to expand and handle the challenges ahead. The article includes lengthy responses to this question from top executives at Norfolk Southern, BNSF Railway, Union Pacific, CSX, CN, Canadian Pacific Railway, and Kansas City Southern.
