Abstract
British Waterways aims to double freight carried on the waterways to 7 million tonnes in five years. Water freight is suitable for transporting goods that do not need to be moved at speed, e.g. waste and aggregates. Waste is transported along the Lee Navigation canal to the Edmonton energy-from-waste plant. Marks and Spencer use water freight to carry cardboard waste from London to a recycling mill in Birmingham. The company is examining the possibility of moving non-perishable goods from London to more local recycling facilities. British Waterways is also planning to use canals to transfer water from areas of surplus to areas of demand. British Waterways is also a shareholder in Easynet, a telecoms service operator. Much of the communications fibre optic network is laid under canal towpaths to reach UK cities.
