Abstract
A prototype automated passenger bridge (APB) has been successfully demonstrated in trials at the Lester B. Pearson International Airport In Toronto on Air Canada aircraft. The system features a camera and infrared light source mounted under the bridge. An aircraft is tracked once it comes into range. The system precisely measures the distance to four retro-reflective markers that are located on the fuselage directly below the aircraft door. The aircraft's position is tracked and calculated, and once the command is given to deploy, the APB reaches out to the plane, connecting the bridge cab to the passenger door with a locational accuracy of two centimeters. The advantages of an APB can be significant, such as eliminating aircraft damage caused by bridge operator error, promoting faster connection times to aircraft, or reducing delays at the gate. Since the APB requires only a push of a button to activate it, ground handling operators are free to take care of other responsibilities.
